Labor Day Video

For many, this Labor Day will mark the end of record heat waves, the beginning of the football season and a well-needed three-day weekend.

But in a new video on the Department of Labor’s Web site, Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis is sending a strong, pro-worker Labor Day message to Americans – especially those suffering joblessness – that her agency continues to aggressively move forward on issues important to working families:

There are some [policy makers] who will suggest that when times are tough, it’s time to get tough on working people. They’ll suggest that we cut back on worker training, cut back on worker safety, and cut back on giving workers a voice in their workplace. I totally disagree.

Solis clearly and unambiguously signals the Obama administration’s support for unions:

To those who want to deny workers a voice in the workplace, let me be clear –  this Secretary of Labor recognizes, respects, and celebrates a worker’s right to organize and bargain collectively.

The video appears on a special section of the Department of Labor’s Web page, where visitors can read more about the history and meaning of the holiday, along with pro-worker activists’ accomplishments and other information.

Solis has been a strong supporter of the IBEW during her tenure at the Department of Labor. International President Edwin D. Hill said:

As we reflect on the sacrifices and triumphs of workers on this hard-won national holiday, we can take heart in the fact that the person steering our nation’s policy on labor is a champion for the working man and woman. We appreciate Secretary Solis’ dedication to the labor movement.
