Members of Washington, D.C., Local 26 installed one of the biggest solar farms in the Mid-Atlantic region last summer, providing clean and green power to FedEx Field, home to professional football’s Washington Redskins.

As Local 26’s magazine INCharge reports:

In less than three months, the [100 person] crew installed over 8,000 solar panels … over 25,000 feet of underground PVC conduit … and 19 miles of new wire to connect the entire system. On non-game days, the solar panels create enough energy to meet all of the stadium’s power needs and on game days, solar energy creates enough power to fulfill about 20 percent of the stadium’s needs.

In addition to solar panels, Local 26 members also installed 10 electric vehicle charging stations in the parking lot to meet the needs of the growing number of electric car owners.

INCharge reports:

Aside from cost savings, by using solar energy, FedEx Field and NRG, which  oversaw the design and installation from the project, are keeping 1,780 metric tons of carbon out of the atmosphere, which is the equivalent of replacing 349 gasoline-fueled cars with zero emission electric vehicles.
